NY WILDS

Searching for that next wild view through lens and brush.

Think It’s Impossible to Find Solitude in National Parks? Think Again.

Picture, if you will, Sequoia National Park on a modern-day Fourth of July. Granite ablaze with summer sunshine? Check. Black bears frolicking through pine-fringed meadows? Check. Trees so wondrously large you could (at one ridiculous point in time) barrel a truck right through ‘em? Check. Oh, and don’t forget […]

Here is a great read for finding ways to get the solitude most of look for when going out into popular areas like National Parks.  As the high peaks become more and more popular every year in the Adirondacks, these same principles apply.

Getting your winter love on can be difficult, but there is a unique quietness to climbing a high peak or fire tower in the winter.  Most of my solo hikes recently have been during the winter and most of the time I will have solitude at the summit.   I also find that the conversation when passing a fellow hiker or backpacker during the winter becomes a little more deeper than the head nod or “you’re getting closer with every step” since the interactions with others is not nearly as frequent.
