Lately, I find myself day hiking with one pole and backpacking with two.  I never use poles for ascents and most always on decent.  However the gray area of flat hikes or gentle grades may question if trekking poles even required, especially two poles.  There are times that I find having two poles is greatly appreciated especially when working across the beaver dam or freshly soaked bogs with undetermined depths.  “Our bog crossings in the Adirondacks have been known to swallow hikers in a blink!”  – NY WILDS
