Hiking Report
If you’re looking for a memorable hike in the Adirondacks, Bald Mountain, also known as Rondaxe Mountain, should be at the top of your list. Located just north of Old Forge, NY, this popular fire tower mountain offers a combination of striking views, engaging terrain, and a sense of accomplishment for hikers of all skill levels.

Trail Overview
The hike begins with a flat and easy path, but don’t let that fool you—most of the elevation gain is packed into the first half-mile. After this initial climb, the trail transitions into a scenic ridge hike, offering stunning views to the east. The varied rock formations along the trail make this hike interesting and dynamic, keeping your attention from start to finish. However, families with younger children should exercise caution as the trail nears the fire tower; cliff ledges become more prominent in this section.

Winter Hiking Experience
This hike is a year-round favorite for me, and I recently had the opportunity to tackle it in the winter. The snow-covered trail added an extra layer of beauty and challenge to the experience. With the right gear—microspikes and trekking poles—winter hiking on Bald Mountain is both safe and rewarding. The crisp air and snow-draped trees transformed the familiar path into something magical.

The Fire Tower Challenge
Bald Mountain is one of many fire towers included in the Adirondack Fire Tower Challenge. Reaching the top and climbing the historic fire tower is a highlight of the hike. The panoramic views from the tower—especially in winter—are worth every step. From the summit, you can see nearby lakes, rolling hills, and the vast expanse of the Adirondacks.

A Go-To Hike
This is a hike I return to several times each year. In fact, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve scampered up this mountain. Its manageable length and stunning views make it an ideal choice for any day—whether I’m squeezing in a quick adventure or introducing friends to the wonders of the Adirondacks. While winter adds a special charm, Bald Mountain is equally breathtaking during the lush greens of summer or the vibrant reds and golds of fall.

Final Thoughts
Whether you’re checking off another peak in the Fire Tower Challenge or simply looking for a quick and satisfying hike, Bald Mountain delivers. The mix of rugged terrain, stunning views, and the historic fire tower make it a must-visit destination in the Adirondacks. For those venturing out in winter, the added quiet and snow-covered landscape elevate the experience to something truly unforgettable.
